When one thing ends…
Another thing begins. While Eli and the Giants’ victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII was more-than-impressive, I’m more excited about what the official conclusion of the 2007 season means; the 2008 off-season has arrived! Free agency, scouting, combine, trade talks, the draft, pre-season—oh, my!
In Rex We Trust
The Chicago Bears currently have five players of major significance slated to become unrestricted free agents on Feb. 29: quarterback Rex Grossman, wide receiver Bernard Berrian, linebacker Lance Briggs, guard Ruben Brown, and special teams player Brendan Ayanbadejo. The Bears probably either can not, or will not, bring back all five players. Rex Grossman is arguably the most needed.
I understand, maybe more than anyone, how wildly inconsistent Rex has been throughout his young career. But he has the tools; the arm strength, the confidence, and the poise to lead the Bears for years to come. Plus, maybe most importantly, the players respond to him. Remember in 2005 when Rex came in against the Atlanta Falcons to start the second half? The bench absolutely erupted. Players were freaking out like giddy school children. Even as Rex was getting scrutinized throughout most of their Super Bowl run, players and coaches came to his defense over and over again.
The Bears quarterback position has been an infamous carousel of let-downs and inadequacies for the better part of twenty years now. Sexy Rexy led us to the Super Bowl last season, and after being benched early into this season, proved that his head was right upon making his return.
In the three and a half games that he played prior to attaining a season-ending injury at Washington, he threw for 897 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
If Rex can build upon this success, cut back on his fumbles, and improve decision making, he is well worth keeping around. The Bears need their franchise quarterback and they need him badly. With numbers comparable to Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning (Manning had 23 TD-20 Int in ’08, Grossman had 23 TD-20 Int in ’07), I think the Bears have their guy.

I trust in Rex2.GO REX! GO BEARS!
