Bears add running back Kevin Jones; Garrett Wolfe curses his small stature

by Shea Johnson on Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 12:35 pm

Nicely done, Jerry Angelo. Nicely done. Just when it seemed like the Bears had lost interest in the Virginia Tech product, I wake up this morning to news that proves the Bears were probably entirely interested all along.

The Bears have signed running back Kevin Jones to a one-year deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

We originally reported the Bears interest in Jones on June 11. But then, after head coach Lovie Smith made it clear the Bears didn’t “have any plans to [add a veteran running back],” we thought it was over. Yet, we still held a glimmer of hope until Jones’ highly-publicized workout attracted only four NFL team representatives — none of which were from the Bears.

Yet, here we are today: proof that the NFL can sometimes be an unpredictable muddle of waiver wires and trades.

With the addition, the Bears’ current running back situation looks as follows: rookie Matt Forte, Kevin Jones, Adrian Peterson, Garrett Wolfe, P.J. Pope and Matt Lawrence.

Expect Jones and Forte to fight it out for the starting job in training camp and maybe, through preseason too. The move will also likely indicate one of two things: Either Wolfe gets the axe or Peterson gets moved strictly to special teams, since it is unlikely the Bears would carry four backs on their roster.

[...] Bears added the former Lion back on July 15. As of now, it’s uncertain whether or not Jones will be able to participate [...]

I like the addition of Kevin Jones on the Bears, but I think they need to keep Garrett Wolfe on this team, and not give up on him. He has al lot of promise.

I like the addition of Kevin Jones on the Bears, but I think they need to keep Garrett Wolfe on this team, and not give up on him. He has a lot of promise. This kid has lots of skills, and speed. He also sees the open field pretty well. It just takes time for him to develop into this league. Give it time you’ll see. He might just turn out to be another Barry Sanders. It’ll be like the Bears having two former Detroit Lions on there team.

The National Asthma Foundation is proud to introduce the NAF Challenge. The Foundation was created to help families that cannot afford the care and medication that they need to regulate asthma. The NAF Challenge is an opportunity for everyone that raises or donates $50.00 between August 8th and December 5th to have a private dinner with Chicago professional football player Garrett Wolfe. The lucky person will be chosen at random from all who participate to have dinner with three members of their family or friends and Garrett. We should be filming a video with Garrett in the next week or so but you can take the challenge now by visiting http://nationalasthmafoundation.org/NAFChallenge.asp now. Check back to see how it is going.
