The Blog Down Breakdown: SF 37, CHI 30

The Blog Down Breakdown is a new feature of Blog Down, Chicago Bears intended to deliver insight, opinion, and general notes of every Bears game.

He drops back and feels the rush coming. Rolling to the right, he looks down field and spots a receiver in man-to-man coverage. With one fluid motion, he steps up, slings his arm forward, and sends the ball sailing at least fifty yards into the waiting hands of a leaping wideout. Touchdown, Bears!

This was a scene Thursday night from Chicago’s 37-30 loss to the visiting San Francisco 49ers. You’re probably thinking it’s about time the Bears offense showed some competence. Except, the quarterback in the scene was thrid-stringer Caleb Hanie, and the wide receiver was longshot Brandon Rideau.

Did I just ruin it for you? Well, allow me to continue this emotional rollercoaster by revealing that Kyle Orton and the first-team offense, too, looked good. Damn good. Orton, playing into the second half, completed 10 of 17 passes for 147 yards with 2 touchdowns and a 126.3 passer rating. Most important stat of the night: Orton had four completed passes of 18 yards or more.

Orton played with a remarkable poise for someone who only has a little more than one season worth of starts under his belt. For the most part, he was accurate, showed a little arm strength, and made smart decisions the entire night. As much as I’ve knocked Orton in the past for his conservative style of play, it was obvious last night that this wasn’t the same quarterback. Apparently, two years of playing the bench and working on your game can do wonders for one’s ability.

Wide receiver Rashied Davis was on the other end of both of Orton’s two touchdown throws. We questioned where Davis has been all preseason (just one catch prior to last night’s game), and it looks as if the answer was the delivery room. With his performance, I think it’s safe to conclude him and Brandon Lloyd will be named the starting wide receivers.

Just a few other thoughts left: In case the Bears were to limit Devin Hester’s kick returns in order for him to see a significant amount of reps at wideout, Danieal Manning made a strong case for his alternate. His three returns yielded a total of 171 yards. And why didn’t we see Kevin Jones for more than just three plays? I had completely forgot he would be playing last night until I saw #27 streaking down the field for 30 yards. As for the play of Bears defense, Brian Urlacher put it best when he said, “We just stunk, man.” Finally, there is no one I feel worse for than Rex Grossman. It’s become bad for the former Gator. And last night, when Orton heard a boo, it was being directed at Grossman courtesy of the raucous crowd at Soldier Field.
