Injury report out, Tommie Harris not…for now

by Shea Johnson on Wednesday 3 September 2008 at 6:24 pm

Whatchu lookin’ at Tommie?! Could it be the prospect of sitting out Sunday night’s opener versus the Indianapolis Colts?

Harris hasn’t practiced with the team since August 21, reportedly due to soreness in his left knee. I would have bet it was the left, since that’s the one he sprained last year, and subsequently, felt bothered by for the majority of the season. Hence, he was only able to rack up a career-high eight sacks in ’07. Everybody knows that a real man could reach double digits blindfolded and on a crutch. Freakin’ pansy.

In today’s injury report, the first released by the Bears this year, Harris is said to have partially practiced with the team and is listed as the equivalent of probable.

Even if Harris is out on the field Sunday night, why is he having so much trouble with his knee(s)? I fully understand that football is a contact sport and players play through discomfort and pain all of the time, but it doesn’t bode well for a 25-year old franchise stud whom earns his money in the brutalness of the trenches.

Defensive tackles are the defense’s running back. DT’s take more of a pounding time in and time out than any other defensive position – not to mention the stress put on their lower bodies. And so far, Harris has been a trooper. He’s played when he’s had to because Tommie cares about getting paid his teammates and the fans that much. But eventually, it’s going to take it’s toll.

Have surgery, sit an extra hour in the hot tub every night, or invest in some performance-enhancing pills. I know a guy. But I swear to Rahbi Abdullah, if Harris’ career comes to a premature halt because he unnecessarily played on ginger knees, I will…you know. Be upset.

But then again, it could be nothing.

[...] the offensive line probably can’t open up holes anyway, the defense could be still solid yet Tommie Harris and other starters are either banged up or aging quickly, I’m horrified that Ron Turner is going to have Devin Hester run a slant pattern in the [...]
