Forte: “I could have gotten a yard.”

by Shea Johnson on Wednesday 17 September 2008 at 11:32 pm

As we continue to try to make sense of why the Bears lost last week’s game at Carolina — namely, why they couldn’t gain one yard on three attempts — we’re finding more reasons to love rookie running back Matt Forte.

The latest is his response to whether or not he could have gained the yard and made the first down that fullback Jason McKie was unable to get on fourth-and-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

I mean I’m not going to doubt myself on any run, so I know I could have gotten a yard.

It reads simple enough. Yet, it speaks volumes of Forte’s confidence. There was no mention that McKie did the best he could or that any running back would have suffered similar results facing such a formidable defense.

Nah. Forte says he could have gotten that yard. And I believe him. Hell, his nine-yard scamper preceded the three failed attempts at moving the ball three feet forward and consenquentially, keeping the game alive.

For a team that has seen too many Cedric Benson-types and not enough Thomas Jones’, a rookie who will talk the talk, and can back it up, is a refreshing notion.

Forte is a machine to be reckoned with. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t give him the ball on a short run situation. It seemed to me he would easily be able to power his way through.

Yeah. It was puzzling. Go easy on Turner, though. His heart’s been d-a-m-a-g-e-d by Mr. Sun Chips himself. It’s OK, Ron. Forte won’t let you down. Just drop the emotional guard and don’t be afraid to live again.

Matt Forte’s forte must be his confidence (terrible pun, I know).

I couldn’t agree with you more. The idea that they had 2 minutes left in the game and they only needed to drive 20-some yards to get into field goal range, and they had 2nd-and-1 at midfield and couldn’t get a first down… it’s ridiculous. Run, run, run. Do it until they take it away. Poor decisions by both Ron Turner and Kyle Orton.

OMG!!! Someone please fire Ron Turner! Doesn’t anyone see that his play calling lost us the Superbowl! I mean who calls a hail marry on 2nd&1??? Rex was never the problem it’s always been Turner! Now he’s gonna ruin the great mechanics of Ortan and Forte! Please someone help the Bears and let them see the gift that they have in Mr. Forte and let the leash off of him and put faith in the young man! As far as Ron Turner goes…I got some advice for you! Spread the offense you idiot!!! You have soooo much talent to work with! Um no hudle when your in the Red Zone would put the D on their heels and tire them out! RELEASE MR. FORTE…TAKE OFF THE LEASH YOU DUMBASS!
