Blog Down Breakdown: PHI 20, CHI 24

Finally, a game in which the Bears did something my sixteen-year old self never could — finish. Alas fellas, how does it feel to move past third base, and into the warm, juicy orephous known as victory?

On fourth-and-goal from the one with just under four minutes left in the game, the Bears defense took a stand and then made one. A handoff to Eagles running back Correll Buckhalter yielded no gain on the pivotal play as defensive end Alex Brown burst in from the side, reached his arm around Buckhalter and provided that extra resistance needed to keep the Eagles short.

What’s more impressive is that the Bears’ defense also stuffed Philly on second and third-and-goal from the one, ensuring that — to paraphrase the Counting Crows — this game would be better than the last.

The Bears offense started hot and at halftime Kyle Orton was on pace for six touchdowns and 300 passing yards. Unfortunately, he was unable to add to his TD total or much to his passing yards total (less than 50 in the second half), but the offense moved the chains when it was most needed, thanks in much part to the effective running of Matt Forte and Kevin Jones.

The win moves Chicago to 2-2 and a tie atop the NFC North with Green Bay.

Next up: A bye week. Umm…No, sorry — the Detroit Lions.

Wild and ugly game. I can’t believe the goal line stand. It was shaping up for another dreadful loss in a game we were the better team on the field most of the time, like the last 2 losses. That was a very Grossman-esque game from Orton. Finally made some big throws, but made a couple dumb mistakes as well.

We can win this division. Very favorable schedule the rest of the way. All I know is we better beat the Lions this week. We’d have gone 9-7 last year if not for 2 losses to the Lions. Ugh.
