Week 9 Preview, Kyle Orton’s Contract Status, And Watch Out For Mike Brown

by Shea Johnson on Saturday 1 November 2008 at 11:00 pm

You could say this Sunday’s game versus Detroit has all the makings of a trap game if the Bears aren’t careful. Luckily, if anyone on the team has Internet access, they were warned here, here, and oh, here too.

We get it. Don’t look past the Lions. Well, last time I checked, their starting quarterback is known for running out of his own endzone. Sorry if that doesn’t necessarily color me worried. But it’s true. The Bears shouldn’t take Detroit, or any NFL team, for granted. Even if their QB is Dan Orlovsky.

Speaking of quarterbacks, that one guy who replaced Brett Favre in Green Bay just got a six-year, $65 million extension with $20 million in guaranteed bones. If you consider that Aaron Rodgers and Kyle Orton have the same agent, Orton’s playing exceptionally well right now, and he’s in the final year of his deal: it’s not a stretch to think Orton will be cashing in soon as well. And who’s contract do you think will act as the point of reference for the deal?

Mike Brown probably isn’t looking at a contract extension anytime in the near future.  The 30-year old with a laundry list for an injury history is still my favorite current player. He’s played in all seven games so far this year and certainly hasn’t been a detriment to the team, but hasn’t been involved in the big plays that are typical of his game.

I need to definitely pick up my play. I want to be A-plus,” Brown told the Sun Times. “I think you’re going to see a difference this week, though.” Translation: Casey Fitzsimmons, you’re gonna get blowed up.

I just hope Orton isn’t out the door next season. The McCaskeys are not known for their free-spending ways, especially on offense. And they haven’t exacacly rolled out the red carpet for Orton these past three seasons. If push comes to shove, who will blink?

No way Orton leaves. Bears brass wouldn’t dare keep the ball in Rex’s hands anymore than he probably would.
