Big Money Players On A One-Way Trip Out Of Town?

by Shea Johnson on Friday 21 November 2008 at 6:50 pm

Lance Briggs insists the big paychecks GM Jerry Angelo handed out this offseason to star defensive players has not affected their desire to win.

“‘I’ve played with the guys here for a long time, and there’s no way you can convince me that these guys are playing satisfied,” Briggs said. “Poor execution, poor play, yes. But satisfied? Not this group.”

That makes two of us.

Between Briggs, Peanut Tillman, Nathan Vasher, Alex Brown, Tommie Harris, and Brian Urlacher, the organization spent hundreds of millions of dollars in new money this offseason. Now, somebody else has to pay.  But who?

CB are easy to come by in a cover 2 system. Vasher or Tillman should go.

Tillman at least makes huge contributions in the running game, and is the best CB I’ve ever seen at forcing fumbles. He gets beat a lot, but he’s made some big plays for us at the same time, no way do I want to lose him. Vasher, I don’t know what the hell his deal is. He seems mentally weak, and there’s been talk he could’ve played through his wrist injury. If one of them have to go, it’s Vasher by a landslide.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper likes Tyson Jackson, DE from LSU at the 18th Pick for the Chicago Bears. DO you think we need a Defensive end?

I think we need a WR. Brandon Lloyd (go Illini) Marty Booker, Rashied Davis and Devin Hester just can’t cut it. They are all, at best #2’s, but more likely #3s on a good team. Whaddya think?

Yes, we need a DE. Granted, our line WILL improve with Marinelli at the helm, but we need some additional help pressuring the QB.

With that said, Terry, I KNOW we need a WR at 18 overall. Lloyd and Booker are as good as gone. Hester and Davis should be our No. 2 and 3’s. The only way we go DE in Round 1 is if we land a free agent WR like Houshmandzadeh, Ocho Cinco, or my personal fave, Anquan Boldin.
