Never Mind The (Josh) Bullocks
Josh Bullocks is the new Bears free safety. Kind of. Except he struggled so mightily in coverage last year, he was benched after six games.
So, where does this put the Bears in terms of their free safety situation? Slightly better than yesterday. At the very least, they have depth; at the very most, competition for Craig Steltz.
But if the Bears don’t make a major move to improve their secondary’s coverage skills, they’ll have no choice but to draft a defensive end in the first round.
Think about it. The Bears defense was lackluster last year because they couldn’t cover Keith Traylor in a phone booth, AND because they had no viable pass rush to force the quarterback into making quick throws. If they don’t plan on getting better in one area, they sure as hell must get better in the other.
Bullocks had 41 tackles in 2008. By comparison, Kevin Payne had 88; Mike Brown, 73; and Danieal Manning had only 8 less, 33.
Some of his “highlights”.
