Forget for a minute about sizing up his football skill, how well he’ll fit into Josh McDaniel’s offensive scheme, or the fact that he apparently made the Jay Cutler trade. Kyle Orton is the man, and it has nothing to do with football.
Orton occupied the most glamorous position, in the most popular American sport, in an intensely high-profiled city, and acted as if he delivered pizzas for a living.
Even as pictures of Orton’s drunken, frat-boy-next-pledge-house escapades made their countless rounds on the Internets, his response was refreshingly stoic.
It doesn’t bother me. I pick and choose times to have fun. I don’t do it when it will affect my job. That’s my personality, I go out and have fun. If someone puts it on the Internet, so be it. It doesn’t affect me or bother my family.
What starting NFL quarterback can you name that’s like that? No one.
Sure, Orton was the consummate professional, great teammate, and solid NFL player. But most of all, his qualities mirrored our own: not necessarily the most attractive, casual demeanor bordering on “I don’t give a fuck,” and a fondness for booze and semi-attractive chicks who tend to get very, very friendly.
Denver, I hope you know what you’re getting: Not just a quarterback, but one of us. I hope you’re prepared.
