Here They Are, Your 2009 Bears Draft Class

by Shea Johnson on Monday 27 April 2009 at 9:52 pm

Let me preface this by saying, our first ever LiveTwitter of rounds one and two went extraordinarily well. It is just too bad, as I so eloquently wrote on Twitter as the last pick neared, that I chose to cover a full day of the draft in which the Bears took no part in.

My thoughts, originally, were just of the cock tease that was day one.  A) we didn’t draft a soul, and b) we failed to reel in Boldin. But thanks to what we did in rounds three through seven, I might just leave the forty-dollar tip on the nightstand after all.

*Jay Cutler, QB, Denver Broncos

1. Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose St. – The one word most associated with Gilbert in countless draft reviews is “steal.” Not “steal” as found in police reports of players sought after by the Bengals, but “steal” as in “how the hell did he not go on day one?” Also, the word is he’s got a hell of a swim move.

2. Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma – Iglesias was oft-overshadowed by Malcolm Kelly, that is, until Kelly left via draft and Iglesias’ true star was allowed to shine. 74 receptions, 1,150 yards, and 10 touchdowns his senior season says money!

3. Henry Melton, DE, Texas – If Matt Forte slumps his sophomore season or tears any combination of important ligaments, Melton might fill in nicely. Other than that, he’ll begin as a situational pass rusher who should develop into more under the tutelage of Rod Marinelli.

4. D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt – Nathan Vasher: get better soon, or slam something metal into Moore’s knee Tanya Harding-style.

5. Johnny Knox, WR, Abilene Christian – Deep threat from the same school that brought you that one guy.

6. Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio St. – Legitimate talent, who like Iglesias, was overshadowed by someone slightly better and much more celebrated. Expect Freeman to join Jamar Williams and be subject to awkward will-they-or-won’t-they start discussions for many years to come.

7. Al Afalava, S, Oregon St. – Loved him on The Little Rascals.

8. Lance Louis, TE, San Diego St. – I thought he was a guard.

9. Derek Kinder, WR, Pitt – This guy sounds white. Shan’t he be on the Colts?

* I’VE. HEARD. HE. COULD. BE. OUR. NEW. FIRST. FRANCHISE. QUARTERBACK. SINCE. TV. COLORIZED.
