Drew Rosenhaus Tweet Assumes To Ignite Boldin Trade Rumors All Over Again

by Shea Johnson on Saturday 9 May 2009 at 2:00 pm

The following suggests the Bears trade for Anquan Boldin by offering Nathan Vasher, a 2010 second-round pick and a 2010 fifth-round pick in return. Please respond accordingly.

Drew Rosenhaus’ twitter account is slowly becoming one of my favorites to follow–until it becomes my least favorite to follow. You have to admire someone, even as unabashed as Drew, who continues to find new, somewhat-entertaining vehicles for promoting his clients.

Yesterday, fit somewhere in Rosenhaus’ regular tri-hourly updates, was a little blurb regarding the expected whereabouts of Anquan Boldin in 2009:

“I still believe Anquan will be traded before training camp. I hope to work together with the Cardinals to resolve this situation by then.”

Inevitably, whether or not a tweet such as this is just meant to spark a bidding war for Boldin, the question becomes, what can the Bears offer to Arizona in order to complete “the offseason of all offseasons?” Yes, I’m beating a dead horse, but for as long as Boldin’s services could possibly be on the table, I will beat and beat and beat that horse.

Jerry Angelo offered the team’s second-round pick, 49th overall, to the Cards for Boldin on draft day, which the Cards turned down; an offer that was likely made just to see what the Cards would do, but now it’s time to get serious.

With the draft over, the Bears lose a valuable bargaining chip: a pick to send the Cards THIS YEAR. A 2010 draft pick(s) will do less to persuade a team that wants to win NOW, especially if you expect them to part with one of their best offensive weapons just one season removed from a Super Bowl appearance.

Another obstacle for the Bears is the absence of a 2010 first-round pick, which was relinquished in the trade for Cutler. What they do have is a second-round pick in 2010. Considering the Cards had already vetoed a similar trade scenario and given the lesser stock put in a future pick, the Bears would need to add a fifth-round pick for posterity.

Yes, I know: this will leave the Bears without a first, second, or fifth-round selection in 2010. But it isn’t over. The likely icing on the cake, the added piece to top any competing offer, will be a player of starter quality; not necessarily a starter.

So, who could the Bears offer that would entice the Cards enough to pull the trigger? Where are they lacking? The Cards ranked 28th in overall defense last season and recorded only 13 interceptions. Corner DRC is talented and still developing, but Roderick Hood leaves much to be desired. Eric Green is a workable nickel back and with Antrel Rolle moved to free safety, competition to push the corner play should be an attractive-enough deal maker.

Enter Nathan Vasher. The one-time Pro Bowler has fallen susceptible to injuries over the last three years and thus, fallen out of favor with Angelo, who ultimately challenged The Interceptor to “take his game to another level.” Still, Vasher, in half as many games started (7) as Hood (14) in 2008, finished with the same number of picks–one. Throw in the fact, too, that Vasher is only 27.

The Bears drafted Vandy corner D.J. Moore in the fourth round of this year’s draft assuming Vasher wouldn’t remain healthy nor return to his old ways. If Vasher were to go, they’ll be covered at the corner position by the quality depth they’ve acquired over the last couple of years including Trumaine McBride, Corey Graham, and Zach Bowman; regardless of which names do or do not eventually move to safety.

It’s going to be interesting–to the say the very least– to see if Boldin is indeed moved, and if he’s even really a feasible option for the Bears at this point. But why not continue the trend of making an assertive effort to improve the team? I know it’s not something us Bears fans are accustomed to, but you gotta admit: it feels so good.

I LOVE IT. GREAT TRADE SCENARIO AND ONE THAT SHOULD BE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED. WHO CARES IF WE HAVE ANY PICKS IN NEXT YEARS DRAFT. THE GOAL IS TO WIN **NOW** NOT IN 4 YEARS!!! LETS GETTER DONE. GET BOLDEN!!!!TRADE PICKS…

The price is undoubtedly steep. But Boldin just might be the player to put the Bears over the top. That is, if the defense coule put up numbers form several years ago. If the defense can not, then thhis acquisition will be for nothing. Then, we would be stuck with Boldin (which is good) and no draft picks to acquire players in an aging defense (which is, needless to say, bad).
I think there are ups and downs to both scenarios. We’ll see.

Did the Bears fill their holes? Can they and will they be exposed?
