What’s In A Name? Superstardom (Possibly)

Matt Phillip is the newest writer at Blog Down, Chicago Bears. He brings with him a different perspective, new voice and more-than-adept topical knowledge; But, more than all that, he sits in the cubical across from my own.

Okay, stick with me here. Juaquin Iglesias. First off–doesn’t his name sound incredibly badass? It just flows off the tongue doesn’t it? I would love to see this kid make a name for himself so that I hear his name coming from Chris Berman’s piehole on a weekly basis. (Sidenote: Any thoughts on what kind of nickname Berman would try on him?)

But seriously folks, while scouts bill Iglesias as a number two or number three receiver, we’re talking about the Bears here, who feature Devin Hester as their number one and that fat kid on the playground–Rashied. Effing. Davis–as their number two. Is it really out of the realm of possibility that Juaquin could be a sleeper stud at receiver? Hell, he’s got a top 5 NFL quarterback throwing to him, why not???

Feel free to take a look at his scouting report and college stats here: For those too lazy to click the mouse I’ll summarize the report. Iglesias isn’t going to wow you with his speed, and needs to get stronger. However, he’s got great hands and runs good routes; is good after the catch, isn’t afraid to go over the middle, and will likely be in the league for a long time. I think the phrases to pay attention to here are the fact that he’s got good hands and he’ll go over the middle when asked.

Ask yourself a few questions, who on the Bears has good hands (outside of Alex Brown’s Hamburger Helper ones) and what Bears pass catcher NOT named Olsen or Clark will go over the middle?  After you answer those questions with ‘NOBODY’, ask yourself why not my/your/our boy Juaquin? As a final plug for him, I like his steady improvement throughout his four years at Oklahoma, along with his breakout (as far as TD’s are concerned) senior year.

So you’ve got a top 5 NFL QB, an average to above average running game, and a starting receiving corps, which on paper might crack the top 30 in the league.  In Iglesias, you’ve also got a guy who’s ‘a prototypical possession receiver’ with good hands, and a knack for coming through in the clutch. Wow, sounds like the best fit for the Bears offense since… Dennis Gentry?
