Johnny Knox Is The New Bernard Berrian

by Shea Johnson on Friday 3 July 2009 at 10:30 pm

The last post of the week: something to ponder as you await the certain couch slouch and booze binge of this weekend.

Everyone’s always looking for the next; the next Jordan, the next Tiger, the next Erin Andrews, etc. The “next Bernard Berrian” isn’t normally a part of this proverbial conversation, but at least one person, the Chicago Tribune’s Vaughn McClure, thinks it could be rookie Johnny Knox.

And Vaughn McClure, I think I concur! I mean, why not? At 6’0-185 pounds, Knox’s size is comparable to Berrian’s (6’1-185); Both went to relatively unheralded schools, Abilene Christian and Fresno State, and both ended their respective prolific collegiate careers after their senior seasons.

Knox is a burner, posting the fastest 40 time at this year’s combine (4.26 seconds), and any rookie success he will have will stem from his ability to fly down field and separate from defenders. Berrian did it the same way in 2004, before he learned to catch in traffic or go across the middle, averaging 15 yards-per-catch off throws from what emerged as an epically hellish quarterbacking trio; Rex Grossman, Craig Krenzel, and Jonathan Quinn.

Consider that Knox has the benefit of working with a much better team all-around and a much, much better quarterback, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he has the better rookie season.

Good stuff Shea, and I completely agree. He’s excited me the most of all the WR’s from what I’ve read, and you’re right, does seem quite a bit like Berrian coming into this league. I just want burners and 1 or 2 guys we can count on to make the catch on 3rd down. But yeah, just let Cutler fling it as far as he can and watch Hester, Knox, and company run it down. Damn I’m pumped.

The HOTTEST female sportscaster is not Erin Andrews. Just take a look at Heidi Watney who is a Red Sox sportscaster for the NESN network. She is without a doubt the HOTTEST EVER!!

OK, the Fresno references are just TOO much here. First of all, did you seriously just compare Abilene Christian to Fresno State? What the heck is Abilene Christian?

Secondly, interesting to note Vaughn McClure is a former Fresno Bee writer who covered Fresno State hoops.

Thirdly, also interesting to note Heidi Watney is a former mistake-laden Fresno sportscaster with the FOX affiliate. He cousin is PGA golfer and ex-’Dog Nick Watney. Her dad is Mike Watney, Fresno State’s longtime golf coach.

Comparing Abilene Christian to Fresno State is absurd, in any sport. They are a division II school with a name rivaling that of a high school. That is an offensive claim.

Fresno State has 27 current players in the NFL, which would be in the top 3-5 schools in the pac10. With two players drafted in ’09, AC now has three players in the NFL.

I could type the grand canyon-like discrepancies (in football, baseball, basketball … tennis, wrestling … tv appearances … starting to get it?) until computers become outdated. Sorry Shea, while the rest of the measurables may liken Knox to Berrian, the extreme stretch of comparing AC to Fresno State so even beyond the reach of Mr. Fantastic.

Finally, mcclure is a joke and bob is waaaaaay wrong (fyi, lenscrafters only takes an hour). Good luck to Johnny Knox.

    Go ‘Dogs

True, I’ll give it to you: Fresno State is at least a tier above Abilene Christian. But, with an NFL pedigree the likes of Bryan Robinson, Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Billy Volek, Derrick Ward, Lorenzo Neal and Cameron Worrell, I stand by the less-heralded statement 150%.
