Your “Let’s Discuss Tommie Harris’ Presumable Future” Open Thread

by Shea Johnson on Tuesday 27 October 2009 at 8:00 pm

Give a guy a four-year, $40 million dollar contract extension and you expect some things. Not part of those expectations: routinely missing one practice a week, chronic knee problems, sliding production, and an increasingly awkward relationship with the coaching staff. And now … the inevitable talk of Tommie Harris’ last days.

At only 26 years old, it would be almost ridiculous to think that a three-time Pro Bowler could suddenly be on the chopping block, except for the unfortunate reality that none of this is really sudden. Harris has battled knee injuries and nuisances for the last two years; couple that with growing questions about his attitude and work ethic, and shedding Harris, and his bulky salary, at least deserves a conversation.

I honestly believe our defense peaked a few years ago. Too many big contracts on the defensive side of the ball, time for us to get “Steelerish” and let them go!! This means Urlacher too

Then on the other hand, watching Benson run up and down the field on us make you 2nd guess EVERYTHING!! Good luck Angelo

Well, releasing him is not an option. We have too much invested in him, maybe at the end of the season we could deal him off for maybe a second rounder, but more likely a 3rd.

At this point the Bears need to clear the decks. That means considering getting rid of everybody except Lance Briggs and maybe Alex Brown. That includes Urlacher. This current core group of defensive players has gone about as far as they are going to go. Make some trades, get some cap room, and start over.
