Vernon Davis Opens Doors For Trash-Talking Underachievers Everywhere

by Shea Johnson on Tuesday 10 November 2009 at 9:15 pm

You have yourself one good half-season and it’s suddenly alright to talk shit? Niners tight end, Vernon Davis, is pretty confident that San Francisco “can destroy [the Bears] front [four]” on Thursday, among other things. Well, except for Adewale Ogunleye. He likes him, but only him. Somewhere, Alex Brown is chafed.

I heard his comments and the only issue I have is with the word “dominate.” Otherwise, is he that far off?

Under achievers are you kidding me, Shea Johnson do you even watch football. Vernon is the arguably the best player on that team. Most touchdowns of any TE in the league. Rex has it right, hes not that far off.

No, sir, I am not kidding you. VD was the sixth overall pick in 2006; you may remember him as the likable emotional wreck on draft day. In his three years prior to this one, his catches-yards-touchdowns went like this: 20-265-3, 52-509-4, 31-358-2. For those keeping score at home, that’s a hair over 100 catches, 1132 yards, and just nine touchdowns in three years. Not bad … if you’re a fourth-round pick from Duke.

And from, you know, simply a production standpoint, I think Frank Gore has to be the best player on the 49ers, right? But, I’m just talking about what the stats indicate. Arguably. If you mean “best” as in potential or promise, then you just might have something there.

So, yes — VD is coming nicely into his own and it only took three full seasons. Crown his ass?

A conversation like this took place:

Gf: Oh man, we’re going to miss Flash Forward tonight.

Me: I know, but I’m definitely watching The Office if the game is a blowout.

Me: … We can probably turn it over to Flash Forward too, if it’s out of hand by then.

GF: But, Flash Forward starts the same time as the game.

    Me: I know.
