Bears Would Prefer That NBC Not Spotlight Their Failures
So it hasn’t been the type of season everyone in Chicago had expected, you know, with the lofty expectations surrounding Jay Cutler and all. And yes, it is true that Cutler has particularly been error-prone while being watched by a prime time audience. But it doesn’t mean that NBC shouldn’t be allowed to put the whole mess together in one highly-edited, stylistic and dramatic three-minute presentation, does it? Oh, it does.
NBC had wanted to interview Cutler, general manager Jerry Angelo and head coach Lovie Smith for a compilation piece about the struggles of Cutler and the team in general, to be aired prior to Sunday night’s matchup between the Bears and Eagles. The Bears, not surprisingly, said they’d rather not partake.
After all, the Bears have lost both Sunday night games they have played in this year and Cutler has been pretty bad, throwing for three touchdowns and six interceptions. If you count the 49ers game as a “game” — I’m told it was imaginary and will not be recognized by NFL history — then Cutler has thrown three touchdowns and 11 interceptions in prime time games this season.
In response to the no-participation, NBC released the following statement:
“Our job is always to tell the story of the event. To inform our viewers across the nation. It’s not the fault of NBC that the Bears come out and stink it up on Sunday nights. Hell, if we were the Cleveland Browns broadcasting network or the Detroit Lions cable channel, I bet the Bears would insist on sitting for our stupid fucking interviews.”
It’s not uncommon for teams to make their players unavailable when their not playing well, however. Tom Brady purportedly was last week and any given member of the Rams has been since 2005.
The Bears deny any hostility toward the network and are convinced that they remain on the “same page” as NBC. Yet NBC wants to air competitive, must-see football … so who knows who is telling the truth.
