Donovan McNabb, Too, Knows What It’s Like To Disappoint Everybody

Jay Cutler didn’t throw an interception until 45 seconds were left in tonight’s 24-20 loss to the Eagles, which tells me just one thing: The kid is improving! Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of another game in which the defense showed up and the offense did not. At 4-6, the Bears may be out of the playoff hunt, but at least they don’t have any draft picks for the foreseeable future.

Clearly, the high expectations of a championship-starved city have gotten to Cutler. He came out tonight cloudy-headed and visibly uncertain of himself. He badly overthrew three receivers, two of which are two of the fastest in the league: Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. Both those throws, and an overthrow to Greg Olsen, would have been sure touchdowns.

But alas, it’s not like Cutler isn’t a good quarterback or won’t be for years to come. The most abortive thing about that is it really won’t mean shit until at least February. But, there are weapons either missing or still developing — top-flight receiver, offensive line (any or all?) and offensive coordinator come to mind immediately — that are crucial to Cutler reaching his zenith; you know, his two first-round pick-worthy potential.

Oh. And the defense. Yeah, about those guys. The secondary is mostly horrible; linebackers: injured; and defensive line: inconsistently underwhelming . But, Peanut Tillman did play well this evening and it appears like his back is back just fine. In fact, his rejuvenated performance told us what we already knew: His stripping prowess can make balls drop.

And we’re not discussing Nathan Vasher until further notice. His mom kind of likes us.

Next up for this struggling, demoralized group: The Vikings at the Metrodome! Alright!
