Is Ron Turner A Dumbass?
Talk to Bears fans about who’s mostly to blame for the Bears struggles, and you’re bound to get a variety of answers: Jerry Angelo, Lovie Smith, Bob Babich, Jay Cutler, and Tommie Harris are common responses. A majority of Bears fans will say Ron Turner, though. But, is he the true cause of the Bears’ angst this year? Well…yes and no.
Jerry Angelo deserves a fair amount of the blame. Jerry’s offensive line draft history has been well documented (for those of you who want a simple breakdown, check out this link). He has drafted a total of five guards and four tackles over seven years (I consider Lance Louis a tight end or fullback – I know the link doesn’t accommodate for the 2009 draft). If Jerry’s mother is reading this blog, your son needed to draft more OL.
In all seriousness, Ron Turner had a great year last year. Think about who we had on offense. You name me one star outside of Matt Forte. He did a lot with not very much. This year, his playcalling is good at times and erratic at worst: I-form iso, bubble screens, and the traditional Matt Forte let-me-run-into-the-guard-and-try-to-move-him play. I want those forever banished from Ron Turner’s playbook.
Turner will be fired at the end of the year, regardless of whether or not Lovie is fired. He’ll be the sacrificial lamb for Lovie and Co. And, unfortunately, Lovie will continue his bad St. Louis connections to tap Mike Martz’s retardation for the Bears’ offensive coordinator. Fuck my life.
I questioned myself when it came time to send this post in, because let’s be real: family members of the Bears’ personnel read this blog. Instead of taking a cheap shot, let me extend an invitation to Ron Turner’s wife, father, mother, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and children: Holla at me. I will be more than happy to talk with you.

There’s isn’t any one person you can blame for the debacle of this season. It’s merely a chain reaction of shit that has caused this season’s puke fest. When you combine a strong armed gun-slinging QB, terrible offensive line, Zero running game, converted WRs, shit coaching, and throw in a defense incapable of stopping an offense not named the Browns or 49ers, you get the 2009 Chicago Bears.
I just wish someone could be held responsible for this — you know, someone who, like, generally managed the team. I don’t know what you’d call him, but I bet he would look an awful lot like Eugene Levy …
Yeah, that Levy-lookin dude, that is the one that needs to go. He’s the one that hired Lovie Smith, he’s the one that drafted worse than my grandmother. It’s him alright.
The only coach worth keeping is Toub..get rid of everyone from LA down to the sorry ass medical staff..
..oh, and keep that ball boy who hung with Knox in the KO return.
JA..
I agree, one person is not to blame. Since 1985, the Bears have had only one QB that made the best of bad offensive play calling.Turner does not give the QB an honest chance to be good. He does not play the game down the field. Of all the failed seasons, Ron Turner is the only common link. He must go now not at the end of the season.
Can we all now agree that Rex Grossman was the best quarterback in the history of football?! … But, seriously — what do you guys make of him now?
I have more respect for Dan Grossman than Rex.
I was always a huge Rex Grossman fan, I think his biggest problem was that he allowed the media and fans to mind F him. His departure was Bear’s business as usual on offense, fill the roster with an over the hill o-line and average recievers, then find a scapegoat when it all doesn’t magically work out.
The thing is that almost any QB in the NFL, including Rex could be sucessful if they have time to throw and people to throw to. Look at Orton in Denver, there is seriously no more that needs to be said.
You make a good point re the offensive line. Jerry’s done a horrible job of drafting OL, or, for that matter, bringing in OL.
Now I’m starting to get worried that it won’t matter who the coach is – if Jerry’s still calling the shots, we’ll still have a bad OL and, as a result, offense.
Here is a thought…FIRE RON…No something more positive Why should the GreaseBay Slackers be the only franchise with a publicly owned team? Here are DaBears Financials: Revenue $226 mil Operating Income $33.7 mil Player Expenses $134 mil Gate Receipts $55 mil
The Bears should sell BEARBONDS ;-) 100000 bonds should be offered at $1000 each. This would raise a quick $100MM generate a huge buzz throughout the sportsworld, and newsmedia, we could buy out the contracts of these lame duck coaches, and get Shanahan in here asap! Hey the bonds could be set to mature in 7yrs. and could be traded at anytime on the open market. Bondholders are randomly mailed 1 free ticket each year to a game until the bond matures. Of course other teams would try to follow our model, but we would’ve done it first! OK I’m bored but man this would be cool!
Rex after getting hit a few times was playing scared. More scared against some teams than others. I knew that he would always play bad against a defense that had someone on the defensive line that was scary. Those were the real reasons he threw off his back foot, fumbled the centers snaps, and numerous other bad things. Lost at the time was that Ron Turner was one of the worst offensive coordinators in football. One reason Rex started over Brian the year the Bears could have gone undefeated and won the Superbowl. Ron Turners play calling is horrible to say the least and gets worse the closer the Offense gets to the endzone. Ron does a terrible job scouting teams, having the offense ready, and never takes advantage of a mismatch.
So, you’re saying Rex would have been better served never ever knowing Ron Turner or his inept play calling? Would you agree that the only difference between Rex and Cutler is that Cutler had proven himself while with a good offense? What if Rex had been drafted by Denver? Forgive me: I’m just curious if anyone else shares my It-Wasn’t-Rex ideology.
Ahem: It-Wasn’t-All-Rex …
