Bears In Talks With USC OC Jeremy Bates
Via the Worldwide Leader, the Bears are going to talk with USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates as correctly pointed out a few days ago by one of our astute commenters. Normally, I would love this idea, sort of. USC has consistently put out above average-to-killer offenses over the last ten years. However, you only need to look at Norm Chow’s lukewarm history in the NFL to know that success is tough to come by (DUH!).
Chow was the engineer of USC’s offensive juggernaut early in the 2000′s, then went to Tennessee and promptly did nothing to write home about. His successor Steve Sarkesian went on to coach at U-Dub and … meh. Now, it’s Bates’ turn.
USC didn’t have that great of an offensive year, by USC standards. Granted, they had a freshman quarterback and no real playmakers on offense, but that sounds like a theme that’s been repeated in this town since the late 80′s.
So your thoughts on this? Should we make a move on Mr. Bates or wait until we find a disciple of Ron Turner? Or is it incredibly pathetic that I’m analyzing USC’s offensive prowess to determine if the 2010 Bears’ offense will be upgraded by another OC from SC?

Cutler has worked with Bates and loves him. We get him just because of his relationship to Cutler. And frankly, that’s what I want. Someone who Cutler respects who can break him down and build him back up.
I agree with bringing Bates in, however I would prefer to see him as Cutlers QB coach. If Cutler has this outstanding relationship with Bates he wont mind, and we could persue someone who may be more qualified. The issue is that, typically it is the OC who will have a big say in who is hired for the other offensive coaching positions. It will be interesting, if he is hired for OC I think I speak for everyone in hoping that the Trojans last season was a fluke.
He was only there one year! And after a year where USC got cleaned out. USC struggled on offense, but their whole team sucked this year.
who do you guys think will become the bears new dc. i listen to 670 the score and they like perwell but i like the idea of herm edwards even though his bright personality might clash with lovies “rex is our qb” mono tone boringness personality.
I like Fewell, myself.
Let it be known: I’m against this whole Bates thing.
I’m with staley. Why make Bates the OC? Because Cutler wasn’t a dick to him in Denver? Honestly, if Cutler responds to Bates and is assumed to grow through him, make him the QB coach.
Per the last two comments, I would be okay with Fewell; He was DB coach in 2005 when both Peanut and Vash had their best season.
As you were.
Cutler’s the face of the franchise. Make him happy and give him tutelage that he needs.
Do you really want Mike Martz here? It’s pretty much Bates or Martz. And Martz is a walking disaster.
How great would it be if we could bring back Rivera. If Lovie cant get it done this year give the HC postion to him. I’ve heard he is in talks to be head coach at some other cities so he is in the market. Just a thought probably wishful thinking.
Just for the record I am not a fan of Martz, Bates just makes me nervous because he would be getting a promotion after not being able to have success as an OC in college. He did well as a QB coach and I would rather see him come in and give Jay what he needs without having to handle the responsibilities of the entire offense. Either way I like to think that there has to be some others in the mix besides Bates and Martz.
ron rivera overated. yes bears d was best when he was here but that was also when everyone was in prime. and everyone talks about how bad cover 2 is… but when we had our sb run we ran cover 2 the most
Supposed list of OC candidates: here
And DC candidates: here
How about Al Saunders? Anyone?
Here’s the bottom line: Lovie and Mike Martz have a history, which means that there’s a good chance Martz would come here. If I’m forced to pick between the two, I’m taking Bates in a heartbeat. Martz has been a walking disaster.
Not really buying the Rivera being overrated argument. Defense essentially fell apart in 2007 after we sent him packing to San Diego. As far as the OC goes I’ll go on record and say that I wouldn’t mind Bates coming here and taking over the job.
/looks at list
I’ll actually take John Shoop over any of those guys.
….still drunk from last night where Shea, Gavin and I spent all of MY money on Old Style and cheap hookers.
Bates is going to seattle to be the o/c with Pete Carroll
I agree with Shea Al Saunders would be a nice oc to have. him or mad mike
