Just Keep Them Away From Your Collarbones, Charles Rogers

by Shea Johnson on Thursday 2 July 2009 at 9:30 pm

Hey, ladies and gentleman! Guess which former collar bone-deficient Detroit Lion’s name is resurfacing? If you said Charles Rogers, take yourself a Vicodin and pat yourself on the back… just not too hard. Collarbone, remember? (more…)

The Extreme Delusions Of Peter Warrick

by Matt Phillip on Sunday 21 June 2009 at 8:00 pm

So Peter Warrick–remember him? After tearing up the ACC and college football in general while at Florida St, Warrick got drafted by Cincinnati number four overall in 2000. He had a nice year in ‘03 but got injured and missed most of ’04, and after one season with Seattle he was shipped to the red-headed stepchild of the NFL, the CFL (Cue blood-curdling screams). Why should you care, dear reader? Well, now Mr. Warrick wants to play for the Bears. (more…)

After Short Visit With Chiefs; Mike Brown Lured Back To Chicago, Signs One-Year Deal

by Shea Johnson on Friday 5 June 2009 at 11:00 am

TOMORROW’S HEADLINE: A new segment of Blog Down aimed toward predicting the ridiculous and inevitable; Tomorrow’s story lines as a result of today’s news.

Within minutes of the Kansas City Chiefs hosting veteran free safety Mike Brown–the first team he’s visited since he became a free agent three months ago–Brown heard a familiar sound. It was “Don’t Pull Your Love” by Glen Campbell, the ringtone assigned to coach Lovie Smith’s personal number. (more…)

Keep Lance Briggs Away From Child-Unsafe Objects

by Shea Johnson on Tuesday 28 April 2009 at 11:08 pm

Everybody’s favorite accident-prone Pro Bowler, Lance Briggs, is at it again. This time it’s a straight-edged razor, not a high-priced sports car, and a hand, not a pole on Eden’s Express Way.

Fool Me Once, Shame On You; Fool Me Twice, We’re Not Gonna Draft An Airese Currie Again

by Shea Johnson on Saturday 25 April 2009 at 12:00 pm

Tired of foolishly taking fliers on prospects with injury histories only to see them materialize into NFL pros with injury histories, the Bears have committed to not doing that anymore.

The Bears are going to look closer at their medical evaluations of players when there’s a question mark. This decision comes in light of the firestorm created last summer when first-round pick Chris Williams went down with a herniated disc in his back on the second day of training camp — the same disc the Bears knew had a ‘’stabile herniation.”

Um… duh?

Bears Match Bills Offer Twice, Re-Sign RB Kevin Jones

by Shea Johnson on Friday 6 March 2009 at 4:52 pm

The Bears and running back Kevin Jones have agreed to a two-year, $3.5 million deal. Jones, who had been talking to Buffalo, will come back to Chicago for a second year after the Bears matched two Bills offers.

It’s sort of surprising the Bears went after Jones as aggressively  as they did. He carried the ball just 34 times in 11 games last year, never getting the chance to find his rhythm.

Part of it could have been that he wasn’t really 100% healthy after coming off of reconstructive knee surgery in January 2008. The other part would be the break out of rookie RB Matt Forte.

Jones will go into 2009 as the primary backup behind Forte, nullifying the need for the Bears to take a RB in this year’s draft.

Expect Jones and third-year pro, Garrett Wolfe to share more carries in relief of Forte, and our Adrian Peterson to be delgated to special teams.

Orton Will Play…Probably, But That’s Contingent On Him Not Being Questionable

by Shea Johnson on Saturday 15 November 2008 at 6:41 pm

Probable. Could play. Expected. And even expected to be probable.

The speculatory words used to describe Orton’s playing status tomorrow versus Green Bay shouldn’t inspire much confidence that the scruffy signal caller will actually take the field.

Orton is recovering from an ankle injury suffered two weeks ago, originally believed to be a high-ankle sprain. When it looked as if he’d be sidelined for at least a month, Orton didn’t think he’d miss one game. Well, he did, and such is the conflict between optimism and reality. Here’s to his return tomorrow belonging to the latter.

B. Lloyd’s Knee Takes Time To Heal When It Hurts So Much

by Shea Johnson on Wednesday 12 November 2008 at 7:57 pm

Two days after we dared to wonder why Brandon Lloyd was still inactive, and would be ballsy (or unballsy) enough to say he’s waiting to be 100 percent, the Sun-Times is putting it out there: the Bears coaching staff is displeased with Lloyd’s lengthy recovery.

Depending on how much stock you put into the word on the street, Lloyd was ready to play last Sunday versus Tennessee, but instead, was sat by the team as punishment for possessing the pain tolerance of a Laguna Beach actor cast member. (more…)

Where Art Thou, Brandon Lloyd?

by Shea Johnson on Monday 10 November 2008 at 8:29 pm

Never did I ever think I’d write the following sentence:

Certainly, there are more pressing needs facing the Bears right now than the play of wide receiver. Brandon Lloyd can’t play cornerback, rush the passer, or return a kick for six for Devin Hester.

Nonetheless, through four games he looked as close to a true number one receiver as the Bears have had this year. So getting him back on the field wouldn’t hurt.

The only problem is, Lloyd wants to wait it out until he’s 100 percent. Since when did any professional footballer play at 100 percent? (more…)

A Minimal Amount Of Fans Rejoice; Rex Grossman To Make Return

by Shea Johnson on Sunday 2 November 2008 at 12:59 pm

If you’re one of the 50 or so Sexy Rexy fans left, you’ll be thrilled to learn that the infamously inconsistent quarterback is starting the second half of today’s game.

Kyle Orton has been taken to the locker room after injuring his lower leg attempting to dive for a first down. The injury occured with less than one minute remaining in the first half. As Orton dove, Lions defensive end DeWayne White fell on top of him and Orton’s cleat appeared to get awkwardly caught on White’s kneepad.

Orton’s listed as questionable to return. Grossman, on the other hand, has already overthrown Devin Hester and tossed up another wobbly overthrow on third down. Fans are literally shaking their heads and the boo birds are in full force. More to come.
