‘Regret’ Is Not A Word Known To Mike Ditka

by Shea Johnson on Friday 12 March 2010 at 1:00 am

In 1999, then-Saints head coach, Mike Ditka, and general manager, Bill Kuharich, did what we’ve all done: trade away an entire draft, and then some, for the draft rights to one player. Except, when we do it, it’s on Madden. Either way, 11 years later, Da Coach still isn’t wavering on his decision. (more…)

The Bears Still Need A Safety, Charles Graves Is A Safety

by Shea Johnson on Thursday 11 March 2010 at 8:15 pm

Before the NFL Draft, every prospect is a stud. Am I right, every fan of every team? So once a week, until the Draft, we will highlight one prospect we think could really be a stud in navy blue and burnt orange. This week: Charles Graves, FS, Delaware. (more…)

Jerry Angelo Engages In Celebratory Draft Shenanigans–Awkwardly

by Shea Johnson on Thursday 30 April 2009 at 8:34 pm

This screen capture appears courtesy of “Inside The Draft Room,” a video from chicagobears.com that shows the zany antics of Jerry Angelo and staff last weekend while… inside the draft room. The entire thing is two minutes and four seconds of suspense-filled draft wizardry.

I’m told minutes after this gesture-to-show-approval occurred, Angelo found a very reserved Lovie Smith in the hallway and chest-bumped him, despite the coach’s request that he do otherwise.

That Draft Thingy Happens Tomorrow, Huh?

by Shea Johnson on Friday 24 April 2009 at 10:40 pm

The last post of the week: something to ponder as you await the certain couch slouch and booze binge of this weekend.

BREAKING: The Lions have made good on their efforts to reach a deal with someone, anyone, before the draft. It’s Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford for six years, $78 million. Ouch.

I assure you, the Lions will regret that.

The most captivating story tomorrow is Mark Sanchez. Which team makes the big trade up, if any, to nab the USC quarterback? I’m calling the Jets. For whatever reason, I see “Sanchez” emblazoned on the back of a Jets jersey. And still, I hear Jets fans booing.

Remember, the Bears pick 49th overall which shouldn’t be until late, late tomorrow night, but we’ll be LiveTwittering the whole shebang. That’s right. In case you forgot, we’re LIVE. TWITTERING.

Boldin Reenters NFL Draft, Projected To Go In Second Round

by Shea Johnson on Friday 24 April 2009 at 8:21 pm

If this ESPN report is true, Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin can now be had, in one swift, seemingly implausible swoop, for just a second-round pick.

Did An SEC Receiver Show The Bears’ Draft Hand?

by Shea Johnson on Thursday 23 April 2009 at 5:16 pm

Former Ole’ Miss wide receiver Mike Wallace might have prematurely divulged what the Bears plan to do with the 49th overall pick in the draft on Saturday. It has something to do with drafting Mike Wallace.

“The (Chicago) Bears are really high on me. They’re talking about taking me with their first pick in the 40’s.”

But would the Bears use their second-round pick on a receiver widely regarded to be nothing more than a late-third to early-fourth round talent? If Dan Bazuin rings a bell, then you already know the answer.

Reminder: Draft LiveTwitter On Saturday

The girls of The Lingerie Football League’s Chicago Bliss want you to participate in Blog Down’s NFL Draft LiveTwitter this Saturday. Funny enough, they told me this four months from now while we we’re standing in the unemployment line.

Hey, This Wideout Named Mohamad Drops Balls Too

by Shea Johnson on Wednesday 22 April 2009 at 12:19 am

Georgia wide receiver Mohamad Massaquoi to the Bears at No. 49 is a notion that has been picking up steam as of late, fueled by lobbying from David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s identical prediction of it, and the early approval of giddy fans on dem message boards.

Matt Leinart Is “Not An Idiot, But Struggles To Read And Learn The Game”

by Shea Johnson on Tuesday 21 April 2009 at 1:09 am

When watching the NFL Draft this weekend, it’ll be important to brush up on your draft lingo so as to avoid potentially awkward stalls in conversation between you and your buddies, and completely understand what the hell Todd McShay is saying.

Mac Engel of the Star-Telegram was kind enough to lay out the different terms typically used when evaluating prospects, and even linked one NFL player to each said term. A few proved to be more interesting than others.

Presenting: The 2009 NFL Draft Live Twitter – Day 1. April 25, 2009

by Shea Johnson on Saturday 28 March 2009 at 2:10 pm

In the spirit of the phenomenon that is live-blogging, and in taking advantage of it’s current, and likely fleeting popularity, Blog Down, Chicago Bears will be live-blogging the first day of the 2009 NFL Draft — well, actually, twittering.

We’re inviting all Bears fans, Bears bloggers, NFL Draft enthusiasts, and people with an abundant amount of time on their hands — in that order — to follow along and put their two cents in via our Twitter page: http://twitter.com/blogdown. Because, let’s face it: there’s a lot of damn time to waste between picks, and watching Todd McShay and Mel Kiper bicker loses most, if not all, of its entertainment value around pick four.

The live-twitter will begin Saturday, April 25th at 1:30 pm CST, or about an hour and a half before the draft begins.
