by Shea Johnson on Sunday 19 July 2009 at 5:15 pm

Breaking news: Maurice Stovall to Bears. Credit Adam Jacobi of The Sporting News for breaking the story. Oh wait, Stovall isn’t headed to the Bears after all? Then who will be our number one? I know, I know. But, are we sure this horse is dead?

Not Sure If This Is A Curse Or Not: Orlando Pace On The Cover Of The Sporting News

by Shea Johnson on Friday 19 June 2009 at 11:45 am

The last post of the week: something to ponder as you await the certain couch slouch and booze binge of this weekend.

Orlando Pace spoke about the buzz he perceives surrounds the Bears in Chicago right now in this week’s issue of The Sporting News, which he also dons the cover of.

It’s well known that appearing on the cover of either Madden or Sports Illustrated will spell certain doom, but the jury is still out on TSN. However, having Tim Tebow’s menacing presence in the top right corner surely doesn’t help matters.

Have a great weekend everyone. Send tips to blogdownchicagobears@gmail.com.

Lovie Smith Is Still The Best Head Coach With A Funny Name

by Shea Johnson on Monday 8 June 2009 at 8:10 pm

All logic, expunged by a single list; The Sporting News can take credit for it after ranking all 32 NFL head coaches.

Is it worse that Lovie Smith ranks an underwhelming 20th–mind you, it’s out of 32–or that ahead of him are the unassuming ex-Bears head coach Dick Jauron (18) and the ridiculously intense ex-Bears linebacker Mike Singletary (14)?

That’s right, TSN is basically saying the Bears would be better off with either a coach who they fired six years ago, or one who wears his pants around his ankles during halftime locker room speeches.

Brian Urlacher Is The Best Inside Linebacker In The NFL: Wait For It…

by Shea Johnson on Thursday 28 May 2009 at 10:30 am

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute; Hold the phone. Brian Urlacher, who has often unwarrantably been linked with the term “overrated” while in his prime, is now being called the best inside linebacker in pro football. It’s important to note that his prime was two years ago.

The Sporting News
has Urlacher ranked numero uno in their list of the top 20 NFL inside linebackers, citing the lackluster play of the defensive line last season as to why he made fewer impact plays than usual. True, but I also don’t recall him being engulfed by the opponent’s O-line as much as I do his inability to run sideline to sideline with his previous effectiveness. (more…)
